FAQs

Looking for an assisted living setting? Options include home-like settings such as Huckleberry Ridge, or large congregate care facilities. Here's more information about Huckleberry Ridge and our view on things...

Are you like a “retirement facility” where a person has to put $90,000 down just to get in the door?
No, we do not require any such “down payment” and we are so much more than a facility. It is our sincere desire that once your loved one joins our family they’ll never have to “leave home” again. There is no maximum time to stay with us – whether months or years – we feel that comfort, living routine, and personal care are important and it is our goal to help your loved one for the remainder of their days. We focus on long-term as opposed to "short stay."

What is assisted living?
When an individual should not live on their own, there are degrees of assistance that Huckleberry Ridge can provide. First, we encourage and promote independence to the fullest extent possible.

An individual might simply need general supervision and some simple cues but otherwise be quite able. As time progresses, increased assistance with a variety of daily activities is readily available.

The needs met in assisted living are frequentely referred to as "activities of daily living." These can include such things as dressing, brushing teeth, grooming, walking, eating, management of medications, etc.

What is the monthly cost?
Residency fees vary according to care level. State law requires a complete pre-residency assessment if even your loved one only needs supervised assisted living. An assessment is the best method of identifying the needs and preferences of your loved one. This assessment assists us in mapping out and agreeing upon a care level plan, and allows us to quote you an associated cost. At Huckleberry Ridge, we keep our costs affordable by adding personal care services only as needs arise. This means you don't pay for services you're not using.

Do you accept Long Term Care Insurance?
In most instances long term care insurance works with Huckleberry Ridge services.

If my loved one has specific medical needs that might require special credentials but otherwise they’d be better off with you, how would this work?
In the instance you describe, we coordinate the delivery of any third-party service to meet your loved one's needs. It is unlikely that your situation is beyond our solution. Nursing services, as an example, are easily coordinated in our home setting. Many nursing tasks may also be delegated by a nurse to our qualified staff.

Can you simplify dementia/Alzheimers for me?
These words are used to describe conditions affecting the human brain. As we age, and for a variety of reasons, the brain can begin to fail causing us to laugh with "I'm having an old-timer's moment!"

For some people, the decline goes beyond what might be expected from normal aging. That's where dementia comes in.

Generally, dementia is the loss (usually gradual) of cognitive abilities such as thinking, remembering, and reasoning. It is not a disease but is symptomatic of some diseases or conditions affecting the brain. There are many different types of dementia symptoms.

Alzheimers is a disease under the heading of "dementia." Much research is being done, but it is generally thought to be: fairly aggressive, dementia symptoms include impaired speech and memory, it leads to complete helplessness, ultimately bodily functions are lost leading to death.

What is hospice care?
A type of care for the terminally ill which emphasizes comfort care and pain control, as well as emotional and spiritual support for the resident (and family). Hospice care typically refrains from taking extraordinary measures to prolong life.

Aging and death are both natural occurences. It is a special privilege to comfort our residents and their families through the hospice process. We coordinate the delivery of this service from outside providers.

Do you have a walk-in shower?
Yes, we do.

Do you accept state Medicaid?
We do not accept taxpayer funded sources of payment.

We’re coming from several hours away, how near are you to ocean beaches?
We're located conveniently on the way to both Westport and Ocean Shores – the two main cities directly on the coast. Either is approximately 20-25 minutes from our home.
